REVIEW: Doctor Who: The Church on Ruby Road

Image
This review contains spoilers. Read at your own risk. The Church on Ruby Road is a fun, festive, and mind-bending episode. It seems that Russell T Davies is taking a Moffat approach and dipping his toes into the fairytale and fantastical side of Doctor Who. This is something that particularly intrigues me, as Steven Moffat is my favorite Doctor Who writer and I'm so happy and looking forward to Davies' approach to this style. I loved Ncuti Gatwa’s performance! His incarnation of Doctor, thus far, reminds me much of David Tennant’s Tenth and Matt Smith’s Eleventh incarnations in their earlier seasons. Like I mentioned in my review of The Giggle, I can totally see his charisma and charm and I really like it. And is it too early to say that Ruby Sunday is already in my top three modern Doctor Who companions? I loved her so much! She reminds me much of Rose Tyler and Clara Oswald- two of my favorite companions. I'm so excited to see more of her in Series Fourteen! The plot was ...

REVIEW: Doctor Who: The Giggle

Image
This review contains spoilers. Read at your own risk. Is Doctor Who in a new Golden Age? Doctor Who's The Giggle was an epic of a story. With plenty of twists and turns, easter eggs galore, and the feeling of a true tribute to sixty years of history, this story is truly the 60th Anniversary Special of the three. David and Catherine were heartbreakingly perfect. Knowing that this is going to be their last on-screen appearance for at least a while, saying goodbye again was bittersweet but I liked this ending better than Series Four's ending. The Doctor's Tenth incarnation getting time to heal and be with the people he loves like his own family while the Fifteenth incarnation gets to continue adventuring on was such a beautiful way to wrap this up. Neil Patrick Harris was the perfect choice to play the return of the Toymaker. Though I found his accent to be a little wonky, he gave such an amazing and villainous performance. And Mel! I was so excited to see her, even though he...

REVIEW: Doctor Who: Wild Blue Yonder

Image
This review contains spoilers. Read at your own risk. I guess I really understood the mavity of the situation. ...I'm sorry. There was literally no better way to start this review. Wild Blue Yonder was a question answered and a mystery solved for many Doctor Who fans. For a long time, showrunner Russell T Davies claimed that Wild Blue Yonder was to be the craziest special of them all, and that he wanted to reveal nothing from the episode in the trailers so that viewers could go in completely blind. He almost got his wish, as majority of the promotional content featured the first and third specials. With what little we did see of Wild Blue Yonder, the clips were blurred or otherwise obscured. So I think it's safe to say that this was the special we were looking forward to the most, and the one we had all of our hopes up for. And honestly, though, it met most of them. Wild Blue Yonder was a dark and thrilling journey with a nightmare-inducing mysterious villain, similar to Series...

REVIEW: Secret Invasion

Image
This review contains spoilers. Read at your own risk. I've said it before, I'll say it again, and I'm being completely honest about it: I'm losing interest in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Secret Invasion was a disappointment of a series. What I thought was to be a bridge between 2019's Captain Marvel and its upcoming sequel ended up being a laughingstock at best. From terrible writing to poorly produced visual effects and the usage of artificial intelligence in the opening, it's insane to me that Marvel and Disney would find this to be of releasable quality. The storyline was confusing poorly written, and one of the major choices made in the earlier episodes- killing off long-running character Maria Hill- was absolutely outrageous. Also, I find it shameful that they wasted such brilliant actors as Emilia Clarke and Olivia Colman. Despite everything, the worst part of it all was the CGI and visual effects. Anyone who is in the know of Marvel's current affai...

REVIEW: The Mandalorian: Season Three

Image
This review contains spoilers. Read at your own risk. Why did people stop forgetting how to have fun? After three years, The Mandalorian is back! Though we did briefly get to see him and Grogu in The Book of Boba Fett, I've been anxiously awaiting the next season of my beloved show and it did not disappoint! Pedro Pascal's performance as Din Djarin was great as always, though I was pretty disappointed to see no helmet removal scene as we've had in the prior two seasons. Katee Sackhoff's Bo-Katan Kryze stepped up into a main character role for this season, and while I understand the complaints about this decision, I for one actually liked it. I also enjoyed the return of characters like Moff Gideon, Peli Motto, Greef Karga, and The Armorer. I was expecting more cameos though, from Boba Fett, Fennec Shand, or even Luke Skywalker again, but I'm not too disappointed with the cast lineup for this season. Of course I need to talk about my favoritest character in any media...

REVIEW: Doctor Who: The Power of the Doctor

Image
This review contains spoilers. Read at your own risk. Wow. I am honestly in shock at how much I loved this episode?! I know in my previous Doctor Who post I bashed Chibnall’s era, and while I still hold onto that opinion, this certainly rose the bar. This is probably my personal favorite episode of the Chibnall era. First, let’s talk about what I liked. To start, Jodie Whittaker’s performance as the Thirteenth Doctor was phenomenal, and this episode was definitely one of her best (yet- nothing is ever the end in Doctor Who). From the moment she appeared on screen to her regeneration, I was stunned by how well she did in this episode. I had that feeling that I get with every Doctor- I feel as though I finally started to get used to them, a sense of comfortability is present, and then it is ripped away from me in a flash. I finally felt accustomed to Thirteen, I was finally starting to enjoy her era, and now it’s over. While I am excited for the new Doctor(s) and era, I will miss her Doc...

REVIEW: She-Hulk: Attorney At Law

Image
This review contains spoilers. Read at your own risk. Fleabag who? (I’m just kidding, I love Phoebe Waller-Bridge.) She-Hulk: Attorney at Law is one of Marvel Studios greatest projects yet. Mainly because it targets thirty year-old incel Marvel fans for being incels, but also because it represents strong women who fight against wrongdoing in many forms. She-Hulk starts off as a courtroom comedy-drama and ends as a fourth wall-breaking superhero epic. It was the perfect blend of comedy, drama, real-life issues and fantasy. Jen goes from being a strong lawyer to a strong lawyer AND superhero, which was absolutely perfect character development. The final episode- tied with episode 8- was definitely the best, and it genuinely had me thinking Disney+ crashed for a second- a super creative take on breaking the fourth wall. I hope that Marvel makes more shows like this in the future. Tatiana Maslany’s performance was amazing. I had previously known her from Orphan Black in which she plays mul...

What Went Wrong with Chibnall’s Era of Doctor Who

Image
Whether you like it or not, the critics and fans reviews don’t lie. The past five years were the most subpar of modern Doctor Who history- and it wasn’t because of casting a female Doctor (NMDs DNI!). It was an amalgamation of missteps and mistakes, all of which left the show lacking. Today, I have compiled a list of what I think dragged the show down throughout Chris Chibnall’s era of Who. The Writing Call it intuition, but I said that Chris Chibnall was the wrong choice for showrunner back when it was announced in 2017. I never had a good experience with his episodes (particularly The Hungry Earth and Cold Blood, two of which I consider to be the worst episodes of Doctor Who), and always thought that he just couldn’t write the characters properly.  Turns out, I was right. What Chibnall proved in his five years of writing for Doctor Who is that where his writing struggles is with his plot, dialogue, and primary characters. Even he himself has stated that he didn’t like the turnout...

REVIEW: I Am Groot

Image
This review contains spoilers. Read at your own risk. What a cute little mini-series! I Am Groot is an adorable and fun mini-series of shorts that follows everyone’s favorite Guardian of the Galaxy and sentient tree, Groot. The five episodes take about half an hour to watch, with each episode having a small post credit scene. The fifth episode features a small cameo from Rocket Raccoon. There’s not much to say here, other than the fact that I liked it very much. My favorite short was probably episode three, in which Groot has a dance battle against an intruder who took the same form as him. These shorts, while having some adult jokes in them, are very family-friendly and easy to follow. No complaints from me, other than wishing that the shorts were longer or wishing there were more shorts- but a season two isn’t outside of the realm of possibility! 4 out of 5 stars.

REVIEW: Ms. Marvel

Image
This review contains spoilers. Read at your own risk. Kamala Khan’s story is more than becoming a superhero. It’s about family, friendship, beliefs, and finding your true self. I loved Ms. Marvel. Being the first Marvel comic series I read, I really enjoyed this show (and all of the Easter eggs in it). It was a fun, diverse, family friendly show that doesn’t feel like over-acted crap from the Disney channel, and it presents itself just as that. The plot was very fun and easy to follow, and felt very reminiscent of Spider-Man: Homecoming. I very much enjoyed the high school setting, the background teenage drama, and especially AvengerCon. Kamala Khan is a very relatable character. She is a Marvel fan, I’d even go as far to say that she is a Captain Marvel stan, and that’s what makes her easy to relate to. She is a fan of the same characters most non-casual viewers are fans of. She participates in fanfiction and fan art, and interacts with the in-universe fandom. It makes the show so muc...

Who (Else) Is Coming Back for the Centenary and 60th Anniversary Specials?

Image
With Tegan Jovanka and Ace McShane confirmed for the Centenary and the Tenth Doctor, Donna Noble, and Wilfred Mott confirmed for the 60th, there are sure to be plenty more cameos across the two specials. Here are just a few of my theories of who else may be returning to the Whoniverse within these two fantastical specials. This post contains potential spoilers, read at your own risk! For the BBC Centenary Special… The Classic Doctors Not all of them, of course, but some. You would think that with Tegan and Ace returning, the Fourth, Fifth, and/or Seventh Doctors would make an appearance- even just a cameo! Seeing as the Centenary is celebrating the history of BBC, it would make sense to see the history of their greatest show on screen. Although, it would also be cool to see the Sixth or Eighth Doctors, or possibly David Bradley’s First Doctor. You never know. Amy Pond and Rory Williams Amy and Rory returning was the first rumor I’d heard about the Centenary- and directly after, I heard...

My Picks For The Next Companion

Image
Now that we have our showrunner- Russell T Davies, and our fourteenth Doctor- Ncuti Gatwa, it’s time to discuss companions. I’ve listed four actresses that which I think have a chance at snagging the companion spot(s), as well as three actresses that I would personally like to see take on the role. Starting with… Lydia West Lydia West is a British actress, best known for her roles in “Years and Years” and “It’s a Sin” - both of which were written by Russell T Davies. She was also heavily rumored as being cast as the Doctor before Ncuti Gatwa’s reveal. Despite stating that she was never in the running for being casted as the Doctor, I still think it’s possible she may have a role on the show. Saoirse-Monica Jackson Saoirse-Monica Jackson is a Northern Irish actress, best known for her role on “Derry Girls.” She was listed as a top contender for companion in the same leak that stated Ncuti Gatwa was a top contender for the Doctor, so I think it’s likely that she may be a companion. Rakhe...

REVIEW: Moon Knight

Image
This review contains spoilers, read at your own risk. Moon Knight is one of my favorite Marvel Cinematic Universe projects of all time, and that’s an understatement. The ironic thing is, I didn’t really care about this show at all. It was one of my least anticipated Phase Four Marvel Cinematic Universe projects. I wasn’t very familiar with Marc Spector or Moon Knight before this show. All I knew was that he was an Egyptian vigilante with Dissociative Identity Disorder. Needless to say, I underestimated how crazy, dark, and amazing this show was going to be. Oscar Isaac’s performance as Steven Grant/Mr. Knight, Marc Spector/Moon Knight, and Jake Lockley was phenomenal. It’s rare when you can see one actor portray multiple characters in one show, sometimes multiple characters at once, and do it well. I have only seen it once before, with Tatiana Maslany in Orphan Black. Isaac definitely deserves an Emmy for this performance. May Calamawy’s performance as Layla El-Faouly/Scarlet Scarab an...

REVIEW: Doctor Who: Legend of the Sea Devils

Image
This review contains spoilers. Read at your own risk. It wasn’t bad. It just wasn’t great. I feel like this is getting hated on a bit too much. I thought it was alright, nothing special, but not an absolute dumpster fire. If you want a dumpster fire, watch The Battle of Ranskoor Av Kolos .  The characters weren’t too great. Thirteen and Yaz were just the same old Thirteen and Yaz. Dan stole the show once again, just as he did in Flux. I didn’t really care for any of the side characters, but the final battle was pretty fun. Definitely felt like a Chibnall-written episode (take that as you will). Also, the CGI wasn’t too bad, considering I don’t have an OLED 4K HD television, it looked fine on my screen. The best (and most notable) part of this episode was Thirteen saying “my wife.” I love for this little River Song crumb because my favorite ship in Doctor Who is Eleven and River (formerly Ten and Rose). You should’ve seen the way I screamed and started kicking my legs up and down in...

REVIEW: Doctor Who: Eve of the Daleks

Image
This review contains spoilers, read at your own risk. Sigh… another Dalek story from Chris Chibnall. Here we go again. And again. And again. Anyone who knows me knows that I haven’t been impresed with Chibnall’s era of Doctor Who thus far. I was hoping that after the somewhat improved performance of Flux, the latest series, that the quality would remain through the final three specials of the Whittaker era.  I found the episode’s plot, on the surface, to be an interesting idea. In execution, however, it turned into one big bore-fest of the Doctor and her companions running around a self-storage building- not the most festive setting. I was really excited to see Aisling Bea in this special, as she is one of my favorite comedians. However, I was disappointed in her performance. It felt like her character’s only personality trait was being angry, which made her character seem one-dimensional. Nick wasn’t anything to write home about either, he was just so awkward and out-of-place. Chi...

REVIEW: Hawkeye

Image
This review contains spoilers, read at your own risk. Let’s be honest, Hawkeye was not my most anticipated Marvel Cinematic Universe project… but I did end up enjoying it a lot more than I thought I would. After the events of Avengers: Endgame, I was really disappointed with how the writers handled many of the characters- Clint Barton included. I was extremely dissatisfied with how the Vormir scene went, so I was hoping that this series could at leasts redeem him in some sense of the word in my eyes. One good thing I have to say about Barton, though, is that I loved that Marvel finally gave him the comic-accurate hearing aids. As someone who is hard-of-hearing, it’s nice to finally see more representation in the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Clint Barton, Maya Lopez, and Makkari (who was in Eternals last month). I enjoyed Hailee Steinfeld’s performance as Kate Bishop. She brought out both her sassiness and vulnerability, and she made Kate feel like her own character rather than just a...

REVIEW: Doctor Who: Series Thirteen (Flux)

Image
This review contains spoilers. Read at your own risk. This is the best of Chibnall’s era, and it still doesn’t hold a candle next to the rest of modern Doctor Who. Series 13, or Flux, was a new take on modern Doctor Who. Serialized for the first time since the classic era ended in 1989, this six-part series was very new experience for non-classic Who watchers unlike myself. However, I did enjoy the experience more than any other Thirteenth Doctor series before. Flux kicked off with a bang with The Halloween Apocalypse. Watching this was the first time I’d felt hope for the show since 2017. Then, War of the Sontarans continued the excitement, and was an overall fun episode. The series staggered slightly with Once, Upon Time, but quickly refound its footing and rose to greatness with the amazing Village of the Angels. And then came the crash. Flux’s final two episodes, Survivors of the Flux and The Vanquishers, were a disappointment following the near-perfect four former episodes. They w...

Who I Want To See As The Next Doctor & Showrunner

Image
On the morning of July 29th, 2021 the BBC announced that both Jodie Whittaker, who plays the Doctor, and Chris Chibnall, the head showrunner since 2017, would be departing from Doctor Who after Series 13. Jodie Whittaker is the first actress to play the Doctor in the 58 year history of Doctor Who. This glass ceiling-shattering decision was made by showrunner Chris Chibnall for the 11th Series in 2017, and the Doctor and her companions have been on many fun and suspenseful adventures since. Series 13 will premiere in late 2021 and consist of six episodes, the shortest amount of episodes in a season since before the revival in 2005. The 13th Doctor will go out with a bang, as Series 13 will be followed by three specials, with one in 2021, and two in 2022. A special has been confirmed for Autumn 2022, being called a cinematic, feature length conclusion for the 13th Doctor, marking the BBC’s 100th anniversary. With that, the Doctor will most likely be regenerating in 2022, leaving us with ...

REVIEW: Loki: Season One

Image
This review contains spoilers. Read at your own risk. Crazy. Insane. Maddeningly astounding. (And a lot of other big words to describe what I just watched.) Loki is Marvel Studios’ best show yet. It was everything I wanted and more. Loki is my second favorite Marvel character (with Natasha Romanoff taking the first place spot) so this show has been one of my most anticipated Marvel Cinematic Universe projects of all time… and it definitely didn’t disappoint! The plot kept me hooked throughout the show, and I loved each episode more and more. I loved the first two episodes and fifth most of all, but that cliffhanger! That’s driving me insane. The future of Loki will be revealed in season two, and I literally cannot wait! I loved Loki, of course, but at some points it didn’t feel like I was watching post-Battle of New York Loki. Instead, I felt as though I was watching post-Ragnarok Loki. Otherwise, I loved his development throughout this show. Mobius had to grow on me, but once he did I...

REVIEW: The Falcon and the Winter Soldier

Image
This review contains spoilers. Read at your own risk. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier wasn’t Marvel’s strongest project, but it wasn’t their weakest project either. I mean, come on. Who doesn’t love a little dancing Zemo? The show started off strong, with episodes one and two keeping me hooked and at the edge of my seat. Then, with the best part of episode three being its ending, the show started its descent. Episodes four and five dragged, and it finally picked itself back up in episode six. I really liked Bucky Barnes in this show, especially the scenes with his therapist. His effort to grow away from being the Winter Soldier really showed in the first two episodes. I felt proud that he was trying to help the families of the people that he hurt as the Winter Soldier. It was such good development for Bucky and I hope to see his character continue to grow. I hated John Walker, obviously, and I’m glad he got what he deserved. Although Marvel seems to have other plans for him, which ar...
