REVIEW: Doctor Who: The Church on Ruby Road
This review contains spoilers. Read at your own risk.
The Church on Ruby Road is a fun, festive, and mind-bending episode.
It seems that Russell T Davies is taking a Moffat approach and dipping his toes into the fairytale and fantastical side of Doctor Who. This is something that particularly intrigues me, as Steven Moffat is my favorite Doctor Who writer and I'm so happy and looking forward to Davies' approach to this style.
I loved Ncuti Gatwa’s performance! His incarnation of Doctor, thus far, reminds me much of David Tennant’s Tenth and Matt Smith’s Eleventh incarnations in their earlier seasons. Like I mentioned in my review of The Giggle, I can totally see his charisma and charm and I really like it.
And is it too early to say that Ruby Sunday is already in my top three modern Doctor Who companions? I loved her so much! She reminds me much of Rose Tyler and Clara Oswald- two of my favorite companions. I'm so excited to see more of her in Series Fourteen!
The plot was so well done and had its emotional moments that I've come to expect from a Davies-penned story. From the moment Ruby's mum left her at the church on Ruby Road, to the part where Ruby had accidentally been erased from history. I loved it all the same... we have got to talk about the musical segment though. The Goblin Song was a hilarious and creative addition, and the Doctor and Ruby singing was an unexpected surprise.
Overall, this episode is definitely one of my favorite Christmas specials. I give it 4.5 out of 5 stars, and I'm eagerly awaiting the release of Series Fourteen!
