My Picks For The Next Companion

Now that we have our showrunner- Russell T Davies, and our fourteenth Doctor- Ncuti Gatwa, it’s time to discuss companions. I’ve listed four actresses that which I think have a chance at snagging the companion spot(s), as well as three actresses that I would personally like to see take on the role. Starting with…

Lydia West

Lydia West is a British actress, best known for her roles in “Years and Years” and “It’s a Sin” - both of which were written by Russell T Davies. She was also heavily rumored as being cast as the Doctor before Ncuti Gatwa’s reveal. Despite stating that she was never in the running for being casted as the Doctor, I still think it’s possible she may have a role on the show.

Saoirse-Monica Jackson

Saoirse-Monica Jackson is a Northern Irish actress, best known for her role on “Derry Girls.” She was listed as a top contender for companion in the same leak that stated Ncuti Gatwa was a top contender for the Doctor, so I think it’s likely that she may be a companion.

Rakhee Thakrar

Rakhee Thakrar is an Indian-British actress, best known for her role in “Sex Education” - which also stars the recently cast fourteenth Doctor, Ncuti Gatwa. Because of this, as well as being rumored as being cast as the Doctor before Gatwa’s reveal, I still think it’s possible she may have a role on the show.

Sarah Nauta

Sarah Nauta is a Dutch-British actress and singer, best known for her roles in “Hunter Street” and “Red Light.” While there is no real proof that she is even a contender, I’ve enjoyed her acting in what I’ve seen her in thus far and I think she would make a great companion.

Nicola Coughlan

Nicola Coughlan is an Irish actress, best known for her roles on “Bridgerton” and “Derry Girls.” I’ve been binge watching that latter show recently and I think she or her co-star Saoirse-Monica Jackson (as I mentioned above) would be great as a companion.

Aimee Lou Wood

Aimee Lou Wood is a British actress, best known for her role in “Sex Education” - you know what I’m going to say here. Seeing as she’s another fellow co-star of Gatwa, she might have just as much of a chance as anyone else- even if I haven’t really seen her name thrown in the ring.

Something to note is that singer-songwriter Jade Thirlwall, known for being one of the four members of the girl group Little Mix is rumored to be making her acting debut in Doctor Who. The reports have not stated whether she is rumored to be in a companion role or something different, but it’s also possible that this is a misdirection from Russell T Davies (as he released false rumors to the press about the casting of the Fourteenth Doctor before Ncuti Gatwa’s announcement).

Who would you like to see as the fourteenth Doctor’s new companion? And what companions would you like to see return for the Centenary and 60th anniversary specials? Let me know, and I’ll see you in the next one.

Edit: Many sources, including the Mirror, are saying that Rose Ayling-Ellis, a deaf British actress known for her roles on EastEnders and Strictly Come Dancing, is rumored to have been cast as Ncuti Gatwa’s companion. I’m not opposed to the idea at all, and I’m interested as to how a disabled companion will be written. Very interested to see if this rumor comes true! I made a full post on the rumor if you would like to check it out!
