REVIEW: The Bird and the Blade by Megan Bannen

The Bird and the Blade had an intriguing premise, and I loved the trials and riddles aspects, but I soon found out that this book was not all what it cracked up to be.

While I expected something akin to a Mulan retelling, this was more in the vein of An Ember In The Ashes, a book I had read earlier in the year and did not enjoy for similar reasons as this one. While I did enjoy the action and romance, the gore and overstated details were huge turn-offs for me- I’m not one of those reader’s who is interested in knowing every single time your character defecates.

Thus, I decided to put it down at the 20% mark. In retrospect, I’m glad I did as I heard this book has an unfortunately sad ending concerning the main character’s fate (à la Divergent). Due to all of this, I’m rating The Bird and the Blade 1 out of 5 stars.
