REVIEW: Superman

I have never left a movie theater feeling so full of hope and joy and happiness before.
James Gunn's Superman, a new beginning for DC in film, swept me away. I was never a fan of Superman, having grown up with Zack Snyder's dark and cinematic take on the character, so this film that takes that character and turns it into something happy and fun has given me a new love for the character and universe.
The writing, humor, and warmth from Gunn's previous superhero subfranchise, Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy, transfers over well into Superman. Skipping the origin story as a whole was something I had not expected, but I am so happy that choice was made. I feel like everyone knows the origin stories of the most popular superheroes by this point, and if not the text intro at the beginning can catch the general audience up to speed.
The cinematography was gorgeous, especially during fight and flight scenes, and I felt that the CGI and visual effects were great (but don't take it from me, I'm never great at identifying bad VFX). Speaking of fight scenes, the inclusion of other heroes was something else I wasn't expecting. Nathan Fillion's Green Lantern, Isabela Merced's Hawkgirl, and my personal highlight: Edi Gathegi's Mr. Terrific were great additions to this film and broadened the world as a whole. The numerous cameos were also very fun, but my favorite has to be Supergirl. Her thirty seconds of screentime only made me more excited for her own film next year.
The casting for every single role was perfect, but I have to sing praises for David Corenswet as Superman, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, and Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen. But by far, my favorite part of this film was Rachel Brosnahan's portrayal of Lois Lane. In previous iterations, such as Reeve and Cavill's Superman eras, I was never a fan of Lois due to how ditzy or damsel-in-distress they portrayed her. In this film, Lois is a hero all on her own, taking it upon herself (with some help) to save Superman. That is something I admire, and something I feel meets the standard of our current progression in history. Rachel Brosnahan finally made me like Lois Lane.
Since I've seen this movie, I've been playing the credits song, "Punkrocker" by Teddybears and Iggy Pop non-stop, reminiscing on the hope and joy that this film made me feel. And honestly? That's the real punk rock. Being able to feel so happy and good after seeing a film is something I haven't felt in a long time, and according to social media surrounding the film, my feelings are shared. Here's to hoping that this film can cause a positive turn in the very negative superhero community. For me personally, I give Superman a loving 5 out of 5 stars.
