July 2025 Album Review Wrap-Up

Hi all and welcome back to another album review wrap-up! I spent this month diving deeper into the music I didn't even know I loved. Unlike previous months, I have grouped some albums together to keep this post clear and concise.

God's Favorite Customer by Father John Misty

Released: 2018

Father John Misty's fourth solo album continues to prove to me that he made his best album first, and nothing else he's made has come close. Though I did enjoy this more than Honeybear and Pure Comedy, which is definitely telling for what I am to expect next.

Favorites: God's Favorite Customer, We're Only People, Hangout at the Gallows

Overall Rating: 3.5/5 Stars

Bombshell Oldies Vol. 1-4 by Monica Rocha

Released: 2019-2025

Revisited one of the albums from one of my previous Album Review Wrap-Ups, Forever & Ever by Thee Heart Tones, and there is just something that I love about modern Chicano soul music. I began hunting for more from this style of music and came across Monica Rocha, and I fell in love with her voice instantly. I listened to all four of her five-song extended plays back-to-back and over again.

Favorites: Laughing Boy, I Love You For All Seasons, Hello Stranger, I Need Love, Rainbow, Dry Your Eyes

Overall Rating: 4/5 Stars (all)

Heroes by David Bowie

Released: 1977

Of Bowie's famed Berlin trilogy thus far, I enjoyed this more than Low but not as much as his previous works such as Young Americans or Station to Station. I'm simply glad that he moved away from instrumentals and ambient sounds on half of the tracks.

Favorites: Beauty and the Beast, Heroes, The Secret Life of Arabia

Overall Rating: 3.5/5 Stars

Ok Love You Bye by Olivia Dean

Released: 2019

I came across Olivia Dean after seeing Leon Michels' involvement in her newest album, but I thought, why not start at the beginning? Dean's debut extended play definitely feels like a British indie singer's release, reminiscent of Talia Mar's debut Tough Decisions. I enjoyed this, and I will return to Olivia's music in hopes of growth!

Favorites: Reason To Stay, Ok Love You Bye

Overall Rating: 3/5 Stars

Air Between Us by Coral Grief

Released: 2025

After seeing someone call this band "Clairo but make it dream pop", I knew I had to listen. However, I'd say it was more like "Clairo but make it indie rock." And unfortunately, I'm not too big of a fan of indie rock. Some songs were pretty good though, and I definitely preferred the latter half of this album. Overall it's not bad but I may need more time with it to say for certain how I feel about it.

Favorites: Outback, Mutual Wish, Air Between Us

Overall Rating: 3.5/5 Stars

FROOT (10th Anniversary Edition) by MARINA

Released: 2025 (originally released 2015)

After ten years, FROOT is still her magnum opus. I still consider it to be one of my favorite albums of all time. I only wish she had included Savior with or instead of I’m Not Hungry Anymore, as I prefer that from the unreleased selection of this album. I also would've loved an official release of the Happy and I'm A Ruin acoustic versions, and the cover of Cyndi Lauper's True Colors that Marina recorded around this time. No matter what though, this is a perfect album.

Favorites: Immortal, Weeds, Solitaire

Overall Rating: 5/5 Stars

Here In the Pitch by Jessica Pratt

Released: 2024

I heard Better Hate on a friend's Instagram story and asked her to put me on ASAP! This album is a gorgeous folk album that celebrates the eras from which it's inspired from, particularly the '40s through the '70s. Pratt's work reminds me very much of Hannah Cohen. A beautiful, dreamy and floaty album to relax to.

Favorites: Better Hate, By Hook or By Crook, The Last Year

Overall Rating: 4/5 Stars

Homogenic by Björk

Released: 1997

Felt ready to venture into the next Björk album, and I was pleasantly surprised! A mixture of soothing orchestrals and modern hip-hop beats, it's a timeless album that still holds up to this day. It's not better than Vespertine, but I liked it more than Post (and about the same as Debut). I think that it was just a matter of getting used to Björk's unique voice lol.

Favorites: Bachelorette, Hunter, Jóga

Least Favorites: Pluto

Overall Rating: 4/5 Stars

Equus Asinus by Men I Trust

Released: 2025

The first half of a double album, Equus Asinus takes Men I Trust's usual ambient indie sound and makes it a bit darker and somber. I really enjoyed this one but compared to their other projects it definitely has a tone that I'm not the biggest fan of.

Favorites: The Landkeeper, I Come With Mud, All My Candles

Overall Rating: 3.5/5 Stars

See you next month!
