Revisiting 1989 (Taylor's Version)'s Vault
So my rankings of the 1989 (Taylor's Version) vault have changed since my initial listen of this album. Here are my current (and what I believe to be my final) rankings, as well as their placements on my overall ranking of the album:
1) Suburban Legends - A huge grower and what I believe to be the superior vault track. This song has really captured me; I don't know what kind of magical spell Taylor put on this song but I literally can't stop listening to it. The crazy thing is, this song came out at the end of October yet managed to be my top streamed song on my 2023 Spotify Wrapped, which stops tracking at the end of November. I think I have not only a new favorite track on 1989, but a new all-time favorite Taylor Swift song... sorry Daylight. (#1 of 22)
2) Now That We Don’t Talk - While I love Suburban Legends, this is the most '1989' vault track, if you know what I mean. The upbeat poppiness of this song fits well with the 1989 album unlike the other vaults. Taylor’s vocal growth also shines on this track the most. The only vault track that made my top ten on the overall album. (#10 of 22)
3) Is It Over Now? - A good song that has simply grown on me. I love the similarities to Labyrinth and Dear Reader (my favorite Midnights songs). Definitely a good closing track. (#13 of 22)
4) “Slut!” - The dreamy, beautiful production has grown on me a bit, though I am still disappointed we didn’t get the anti-slut shaming pop anthem I think many of us were expecting. (#15 of 22)
5) Say Don’t Go - I still seem to be in the unpopular minority on this one, but I stand by it. While I in no way dislike this song, it just doesn’t stand out to me amongst the others. Lyrically it is the most 1989 of the vault but nothing about this song captures me personally. Though I do agree with the sentiment that this has the most potential as a single. (#17 of 22)
Just wanted to share my thoughts.
