REVIEW: Prince of Song & Sea by Linsey Miller

I have received an Advance Reader’s Copy of this book through the publisher. This has not affected my rating in any way.

Thank you to Hyperion Teen/Disney Press for sending me an Advance Reader’s Copy of Prince of Song & Sea!

Linsey Miller's Prince of Song & Sea was a very simple but cute re-imagining of Disney's The Little Mermaid.

Instead of following Ariel, as we usually do in adaptations of this fairytale, we follow Prince Eric of Vellona. Miller creates her own story for the unsung hero of the film in a curse of Eric's own. The curse, given to him by a very familiar sea witch, states that if he were to kiss someone other than his true love, he would die. With his friends, a group of outcast pirates, and a mysterious washed-up woman who goes by the name "Pearl," Eric must travel to the Isle of Serein to uncover the secrets of his curse and how to break it.

I'll be honest, this isn't the greatest book in the world. The writing is pretty surface-level, and at times this felt geared towards a middle grade audience versus a teen/young adult one. This story pitches itself as being "The Little Mermaid from Eric's point of view," but I'd say it focuses on a story going on around the main plot as it does not include most scenes of the film. Also, this book has a lot of LGBT+ representation featured, which is not a bad thing at all... however, it felt forced at times. There is a non-binary character who doesn't serve much purpose at all, and it feels as though Miller wrote them in the story purely for the fact that a non-binary character would be included.

Overall, I think this is a cute story that fans of The Little Mermaid and the Disney Princesses would enjoy, but don't expect a retelling of the film. I give Prince of Song & Sea 3 out of 5 stars.

Prince of Song & Sea by Linsey Miller will be available on October 4th, 2022.
