REVIEW: Olivia Rodrigo's GUTS
Is GUTS Olivia's sophomore slump?
At first listen, GUTS honestly just felt like a sequel to SOUR. Not enough musical or thematic changes to really do anything for me. A lot of the songs sounded too similar, like bad idea right? and ballad of a homeschooled girl. Similarly to how I feel about her debut, Olivia just doesn’t impress me like she does the rest of the world.
However, I continued to just listen to the handful of songs that I did like from the album. Then I listened to the whole album again and found myself liking it so much better. It’s almost all I’ve listened to for the past couple of weeks. I’ve listened to it and loved it so much that I purchased a CD copy from Target to listen to in my car (I have a very old car lmao).
To be completely honest, I don’t care for SOUR. I only like a couple of songs from the album. I think I went into GUTS with those same expectations and wasn’t expecting to love it. I’m just really, really happy that I do now, and that I can finally understand and experience Olivia’s music the way others have.
Favorites: all-american bitch, making the bed, ballad of a homeschooled girl
Least Favorites: lacy
