What Film, Show, or Commercial Is This Creature From?

For my first lost media post, I thought to write about this relatively recent case that is gaining popularity by the minute.

On September 2nd, 2022, Twitter user Will Sloan (@WillSloanEsq) tweeted this image with the following caption.

“My girlfriend and her friends have spent years trying to figure out what cartoon [this image] (glimpsed in the background of a family photo) is from. Dozens, maybe even hundreds of people have seen this image but nobody knows what it is from. If you recognize this man, please tell me.”

The image displays a animated white male. He has long, pointed ears, most likely indicating that he is not human (possibly an elf or fairy). He is somewhat chubby, wearing a red shirt and blue overalls. He has grey hair, eyebrows, and facial hair. He may be wearing thin-framed, round glasses.

Will added that the photo was taken in southwest Ontario, Canada, in the Christmastime of 1992, making that the most likely origin location and approximate availability date. It also indicated that this could be from a Christmas or holiday-themed piece of media. Though, it has been suggested that it may be of English, Russian, or European origin. It is unknown if it comes from a film, television show, or a commercial. He also stated that cropping the image and performing a reverse image search had yielded no results. They are even offering a reward for any information on the image.

Many users suggested “The Littles” television series, but it was quickly shut down by Will. He linked a very long list of animated films and shows that had been ruled out. The list also stated that it may be Don Bluth or DiC Animation, albeit unlikely. A number of people suggested that it looked like it was from a commercial for chocolate or cookies, possibly related to the Keebler or Rice Krispies brands, our strongest lead by far.

This tweet caught the interest of many in the lost media community, including YouTuber blameitonjorge (who uploaded a video about the image the next day) as well as myself. As of reporting, there is no update to the case yet, but I will update you if or when there is!

Update: The film has been found! On September 5th, just three days after the initial tweet, Twitter user Rasuran (@Rasuran1) posted images of the film featuring the character, saying “I think I know what you’re looking for.” He later revealed it to be a rare straight-to-VHS Christmas film The Christmas Gift of Light (1991), also known as The Soulmates: The Gift of Light. Mystery solved!
