REVIEW: Doctor Who: Eve of the Daleks
This review contains spoilers, read at your own risk.
Sigh… another Dalek story from Chris Chibnall. Here we go again. And again. And again.
Anyone who knows me knows that I haven’t been impresed with Chibnall’s era of Doctor Who thus far. I was hoping that after the somewhat improved performance of Flux, the latest series, that the quality would remain through the final three specials of the Whittaker era.
I found the episode’s plot, on the surface, to be an interesting idea. In execution, however, it turned into one big bore-fest of the Doctor and her companions running around a self-storage building- not the most festive setting.
I was really excited to see Aisling Bea in this special, as she is one of my favorite comedians. However, I was disappointed in her performance. It felt like her character’s only personality trait was being angry, which made her character seem one-dimensional. Nick wasn’t anything to write home about either, he was just so awkward and out-of-place.
Chibs, the Daleks need a break. Using them in every one of your specials thus far has started to get grating. We need some variation- which is why I’m so hopeful that the return of the Sea Devils this spring will be something fresh.
I don’t have much else to say about this special. It was on the very surface of average, and I’m left hoping that they get better as we reach the end of Jodie Whittaker’s era. 3 out of 5 stars.
